The Premier Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Premier Place.

At first glance, Lux might appear more like a difficult scholarly challenge rather than a new pop project by an artist who just had a last single featured a global pop icon. Broken into four distinct movements and performed in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus exploring female mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, frequently via the prism of different women saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars upwards on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a major orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a long list of collaborators. The pure audacity by itself makes the work of contemporary artists appear quite small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

That this album succeeds in avoid dry intellectual posturing feels nothing short of a miracle, and full praise belonging to Rosalía. While this is not the first time album to fuse historical sounds and the present, the scale feel far higher on Lux, with the balancing act far more pronounced. What truly raises this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense compositions, and inherent theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Much like the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking hearts apart, the listener still desire to be alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful spirit comes forth brightly on a stunning Italian ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh followed by a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo thuds down like comedic impact. The track then segues to the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor wish to know—where you is going next."

Almost every song concludes at a totally different point than where it began. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of celebrity with a delicate orchestration before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work begins out dark and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus arrive to smooth its rough edges.

The Balance Of Art & Pop

Another crucial achievement on Lux is straddling the gap between radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in English builds on a refrain that seems to collect more and more nagging melodies while it spins skyward. This trick is repeated on another powerful ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining layered melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Feast for the Soul

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, an ambitious reach for high artistry amid of impending AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that masterfully controls its inherent excess. It is an abundant source of buried treasure that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't seem like hard work. While other major pop albums of the year felt like a meager meal, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the characters around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between discussions about historical saints, the galvanizing sensation of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about useless men. It is a contemporary musical from pop's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
