The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his sense of self in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
