EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked attempts to cut federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official ruled the action was “a further instance” of tying government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, coinciding with an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau has agreed to take in dozens of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
